The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), has recommended a 15% increase in the number of U.S. medical school graduates in 2005, and are currently considering a new recommendation of a 30% increase in enrollment by 2015. If there is going to be such an increase there needs to be a corresponding increase in the number of residency slots available. With an increase in U.S. medical graduates, IMGs would be forced out of the system. Ultimately, the current recommendations set forth would not be valid because the current recommended numbers take into consideration IMGs impact on the workforce, therefore, the impending shortage would continue, especially in underserved areas.

Although several medical schools have increased their enrollment, even under the most optimistic scenario, efforts to expand enrollment will not meet the 15% increase recommended by the AAMCs.
